ICSB's Major Knowledge Initiatives

Journal of Small Business Management (JSBM):   The primary purpose of the Journal of Small Business Management (JSBM), published by Blackwell Publishing on behalf of the ICSB, is to publish scholarly research articles in the fields of small business management and entrepreneurship. As the official journal of the International Council for Small Business (ICSB), the JSBM is recognized as a primary instrument for projecting and supporting the goals and objectives of this organization, which include scholarly research and the free exchange of ideas. The journal, which is circulated in 60 countries around the world, is a leader in the field of small business research. As member of ICSB, the JSBM will be sent to you as part of your membership benefits (online or print).

Policy Forum: Each year at the annual ICSB World Conference, the Pre-conference Policy Forum is hosted as a main conference event for members in the international public policy community focused on small business and entrepreneurship. This section includes summary reports, recaps, powerpoint presentations and more.

Webinars: ICSB and its affiliates host webinars monthly focused on a wide range of topics. Previously recorded sessions and information on new webinars can be found in this section.

Inter ICSB: Inter ICSB is an online publication prudced as a collection of conference best papers. The idea behind inter-conference activity is to improve the quality of selected conference papers to Journal articles through peer review. Additional aim is to increase international cooperation and networking of ICSB members between conferences. The First Inter-ICSB online publication was launched at the ICSB 2008 World Conference in Halifax, Canada, and the Second at the ICSB 2009 World Conference in Seoul, Korea. For the Third Inter-ICSB we selected the theme to be “New Venutre Creation and SME Growth” for there was a large number of papers presented in Seoul about those topics.

Global Research: Focuses on various topics that the ICSB community researches collectively. In 2007, ICSB community and Dell Inc. embarked on a Global Technology Study. The study included a 12 country survey of small business owners and decision makers and a targeted survey of international small business researchers, practitioners, and consultants conducted by ICSB. The study confirmed that IT is extremely important in the growth of small businesses world-wide. To learn more about this study, please visit our Global research page.

Global Dialog: Similar to the Global Research initiative, the Global Dialog Series brings together experts from around the globe to collaborate on issues of importance to the ICSB community. Various global dialogue topics are underway such as case writing, entrepreneurship education, social entrepreneurship, women leadership, and SME technology transfer. These topics are driven by ICSB members.

Women's Entrepreneurship: The Women’s Entrepreneurship Committee is a Standing Committee of the ICSB with a mission to provide intelligence and information to the deliberations of the Board with respect to women’s entrepreneurship concerns. WEC manages the Best Paper Award for Women’s Entrepreneurship, and also acts as a communications and marketing engine for ICSB with the policy, research, education, and practitioner communities. The Committee is led by a chairperson, nominated by the committee, and approved by the ICSB President. Please visit this section for more information.

Experiential Learning: Section dedicated to experiential learning exercises, conferences and initiatives present in ICSB and its affiliate organizations.

Knowledge Links: ICSB, having a global network of members, is able to identify resources of information we think will benefit other members that are not aware of it. For example, in 2007, The NFIB Research Foundation in the United States developed a comprehensive web site on Small Business research. The 411SBFacts.com web site collected information from telephone surveys of small employers. New Poll data are added to 411SmallBusinessFacts.com eight times annually. These Knowledge Links identify these resources from around the world and are collected in one location for our members to learn about and access.
